While visiting a workshop recently, I saw this Elliot shaper, and alongside it a slotting head attachment. The shaping ram is removed and the slotting head takes its place. If you look closely, you can see that the slotter is massive, it goes back a long way. Looks to be a very sturdy useful looking slotter.

A shaping/slotting head isn't a tool that is going to get everyday use in my shop, but I have felt the need for such an item on lots of jobs; I definitely don't have the space for a conventional shaper in what is already a crowded area. Whereas the slotting attachment will be up out of the way on the back of the ram when it's not being used.

I just noted how much easier the Deckel would be to setup the dividing head using the vertical index attachment. And while I don't have the slotting attachment, Deckel did offer one also. There was one at the auction I bought my mill at, but I didn't want to spring for the price as another gent was bidding heavily and I opted out at $500.

I've had need of slotting gears/pulleys etc.. I have a small broach set, but sometimes it's too small and I don't do it enough to really justify a larger one. I finally finshed making a tool holder for my slotting head. Is is about 16mm x 14mm. I machined a slot for a 1/4" bit, then welded a cover over the slot and machined the holder to size. The end result is a holder with a blind 1/4" square hole. The hole is a few degrees out of plane with the top of the holder to provide some back rake for the bit.

Yes. The slotting chisel has a square or rectangular shank which slides into the matching hole in this part. Then, you tighten the nut. A slotter is the most efficient way of doing some things. I just bought a slotter for my Deckel. Prior to that I was considering putting the E head on a used Prototrak with a rotary axis to automate a job. The E head will bolt right on where the head goes, I suspect that would make it more rigid than the big clevis on the end of the ram.
